Pte Wilfred Yeaman (Montrose), 201st Battalion (British Army): Is in Arkhangel, Russia with the North Russian Relief Force fighting the Bolsheviks. In his diary he writes: ‘Newbould takes the gun position we were supposed to take and we take his. Score a razor, artillery sword and Bolo respirator out of a machine gun dug out. Go over to headquarters for water and on return take one of the packhorses back for a drink. Bolo shelling all along the railway line. I near run into a big galumph with the pony getting back to camp. Major May got a bullet through each thigh. Sgt Pearse was killed earlier in the day’. (Pearse was later posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on this day).
